5 Tools for a Simple Kitchen

A round-up of kitchen tools on Healthy Way to Cook inspired us to create our own list of top tools with a Bite Size twist—got to keep things simple in the kitchen!

I don’t know about you, but having hours to cook and prep a meal is something saved for Thanksgiving only. The invention of cool kitchen gadgets means you can say goodbye to long stints in the kitchen and hello to free time.

Cooking is easier and faster when you have the right tools on hand. Make sure you stock your kitchen with these basics that will save you  extra work so dinner is on the table in a breeze:

1. Pressure Cooker

A lot of people are afraid of the big, bad looking pot. But there is nothing to fear! The pressure cooker can create meals that normally would take all day in two hours or less. It will cut your kitchen duties and cooking time in half, at least. Use it to make pot roasts, briskets, stocks, stews or other brothy dishes that can be prepped and stored in the freezer to be used later in the week. It’s not too early to be thinking about your Christmas list!

2. The Chopper

Having great knife skills may be handy if you are striving to be an Iron Chef, but we say to look past the perfect dice, mince or slice and use the Chopper instead. This tool cuts cutting time so you can focus on perfecting flavors instead of chopping. Garlic and onions have never made it into the sauté pan so fast.

3. KitchenAid 5-Quart Mixer

The KitchenAid Mixer is a dream machine. No more hand stirring to make the perfect batter. No need to worry about cleaning up a mess from the hand mixer. With the right add-ons you can shred a block of cheese in seconds, make pasta and even mash potatoes. Get one of these mega machines and tell it daily how much you love it! Ohhhh the colors…

4. Canisters with See-Through Slots or Clear Labels

Pantry Canisters

Functional canisters where you can SEE what is inside are a must. The storage solution will keep you from fumbling through every item in your pantry just to find the salt. They work perfectly for storing health supplements or tea, but you can also use them to organize your different types of grains (white rice, brown rice, pasta, quinoa, etc.). Organization is key to kitchen quickness.

5. Kitchen Shears

Kitchen ShearsKitchen scissors are a prized tool because they can do everything. They are great for opening bags, but in my kitchen they get the most use with food related tasks. From cutting herbs to trimming the fat off meat, my kitchen scissors also cut lettuce, pizza dough, and even help debone a chicken. Really the list is endless. Clearly knifes don’t get a lot of face time in my house. Be sure to select some that are dishwasher friendly. Hand washing is just another time suck.
