Fave Things Friday: The Amiigo Fitness Band

Amiigo Feature

While it may seem a little strange to be labeling something that isn’t even available to purchase yet a “fave thing” of ours, we have a good feeling about the Amiigo.

The fitness world has recently become crowded with an enormous array of gadgets and gizmos that promise to count your daily footsteps, log your workouts, help you keep track of your calorie intake, and even record how well you sleep. The Amiigo, which is expected to be available for purchase at the end of this summer, is the latest to enter this market, which currently consists of devices like the Nike+ FuelBand, Fitbit Flex, Jawbone UP, BodyMedia Fit Core, and Larklife.

So what sets the Amiigo apart from currently available products? Well for starters the Amiigo is made up of two pieces: a wristband and a shoe clip that work simultaneously to track your activity movement by movement. These tracking devices are paired with an app for iOS and Android devices so that when you wirelessly sync your workouts, they will display all of your activity in an extremely detailed manner – the device can even recognize over 100 specific exercises like bicep curls or squats. Have an unconventional move that you and only you know how to do? You can manually program it into the app so the device will track it as well. The completely waterproof Amiigo also recognizes activities like swimming, cycling, and exercising on the elliptical – finally a solution to one of the biggest flaws of currently available fitness trackers. (As a spinning-obsessed individual, this news certainly makes me happy!)

In addition to exercise tracking, the Amiigo will also record health stats like your heart rate, blood oxygen level, skin temperature, and calories burned. You’ll also be able to share all of the data the Amiigo records across a number of social media platforms as well as compare your workouts to those of your friends. But that’s not all – the Amiigo will also charge wirelessly, and will track sleep patterns.

Amiigo 2

The Amiigo was originally brought to life by the crowdfunding site, Indiegogo where co-founders Dave Scott and Abe Carter were able to raise more than $580,000 (more than 6 times their original goal of $90,000!). It is expected to retail for around $179, slightly higher than the $99-$149 range of most of the current options. But with all of the features it offers, it looks like it’ll be well worth the price.

If you happen to be in the market for a new fitness band, we suggest you hold off just a little longer. The Amiigo will certainly give its competitors a run for their money – pun intended.
