Bytes for Breakfast: Omega-3 Research + Banana Split Parfait

A recent study showed that the addition of an omega-3 supplement as part of a heart healthy diet may not be as heart loving as everyone once thought.

Do we think it is worth stopping your daily habit of taking one supplement a day? No. Heart attacks happen for a combination of reasons from hereditary risk to poor diet. So whether or not fish oil and omega 3’s are not the answer to heart attack prevention according to the Journal of the American Medical Association doesn’t mean you should quit your habit cold turkey. In fact, we have always known that supplements are not always the answer. And, you can bet that their will be a new study that comes out in due time that makes us question our newest healthy habits. With health it is hard to keep up! However, it is only fair to share the information of a study of nearly 70,000 people taking the omega-3 fatty acid supplement that shows that it did not reduce a person’s risk for heart attack or stroke. These are some numbers that are difficult to ignore:

Omega 3 Supplement May Not Be Heart Healthy as Thought

Instead of depending on a supplement to protect your heart, I say you should eat heart healthy foods to avoid illness later in life. Banana split for breakfast? Oh yeah! Bananas are high in potassium which helps regular your blood pressure. Plus they are very filling which is why I swooned over the banana split parfait from Tiny Green Mom. You know you want one!

  1. A healthy diet and good food choices are definitely better than adding a supplement bandaid to your routine. However, I think the jury is still out on Omega-3s. Plus, Omega-3 foods are usually very good for you being high in protein and usually lower in calories that foods with more saturated fats. So, I am staying on the omega-3 bandwagon for now.

    • Like I said, this is what they are saying until the next big wave of research. There is no way to keep up with the healthy bandwagon…it moves much faster than us.
