The semester is over, schools are out for winter break, and it’s finally almost time to celebrate the holidays. While you are busy baking, shopping, and wrapping presents these next few days, make sure to take some time out for yourself—especially your skin! Stress, cold weather, and a lack of sleep causes skin to appear dried out and exhausted. While drinking plenty of water and catching up on sleep can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, certain foods, like peaches, may also help improve skin this winter. When ingested, this fruit might be the answer behind soothing and nourishing weathered skin.

Sliced peaches are a delicious topping to oatmeal, salads, or desserts, and are also a quick snack to grab on the go. A health and wellness website, LiveStrong, states that the vitamin C in peaches “boosts the production of collagen, a compound that gives your skin elasticity,” which is exactly what our skin needs to help fight off the effects of winter weather. While eating peaches provides our bodies with wonderful nutrients, applying peaches directly to our skin may also have benefits. Medical News Today, a website that gives information about health issues, explains that when “applied topically [peaches] can reduce wrinkles, improve overall skin texture, and help to fight skin damage caused by the sun and pollution.”
Furthermore, a website that provides information about home remedies, Top 10 Home Remedies, claims that “you can also rub peaches directly on your skin to help get rid of dark circles and wrinkles.” Wrinkles, which are “caused by thin, sagging skin,” are a result of age, pollution, smoking, and a lack of skin care,” Top 10 Home Remedies explains. “When the collagen and elastin in the connective tissue of the skin become weak and break down due to changes in fibroblasts that produce collagen and elastin,” wrinkles occur, Top 10 Home Remedies explains further. Luckily, there are many home remedies that will not only help prevent wrinkles, but will also strengthen your overall health, and, it seems, peaches are one of them.

After doing some research, I found an entry on Hubpages, a website that publishes magazine-style articles about various topics, that provides instructions for a simple, soothing face mask using peaches. The author combines plain yogurt with peaches to create a face mask that she says “will leave your face feeling fresh, soft and renewed, as well as bright and glowing.” In combination with the health benefits of peaches, yogurt is added because it “contains lactic acid—a powerful nutrient that smoothens out rough skin […] The zinc […] soothes inflammations caused by acne […and yogurt] also noticeably diminishes dark spots and acne scars and brightens skin,” as stated on HubPages. This facemask should be left on for ten to fifteen minutes, and HubPages provides detailed instructions on how to apply the mask.
Verdict: Fact. Peaches when eaten or applied to your skin can help lessen wrinkles and improve the overall health of skin. Give that face mask a try for an extra boost to your skin before the holidays. Be sure to also talk to your doctor about tips on skin care during the winter season.
