Even when you have all the tools set in place for you to have a successful health venture in 2012 the main component that should be on your wellness checklist is if your mind is in the right place. The fact of the matter is that if you aren’t mentally ready to check off you wellness goals you won’t be in it for the long haul. And, what a waste those new exercise outfits would be if that happened!
I’ve quickly ditched my new plans to lose weight or kick the carb habit when I haven’t been mentally prepared to commit…I’m sure I am not alone! Before you begin trying to inspire yourself to go to the gym and pack your lunch, spend some time motivating your mind.
Get in the Mood: Your reason for investing time in your healthy lifestyle can’t simply be because it is January 1. You need to devote a few hours where you focus on the reasons you are starting this health journey that go beyond a resolution. Mental motivation and success will not be achieved with a gym membership and the “I guess I am doing this” attitude. Want to succeed? Emotional energy is what will get you there.
Intention Setting for Beginners: To get started, ask yourself the five W’s. For example: Why do you want to lose weight? What do you hope to achieve? When will you make the commitment? Where will you achieve this goal? And, most importantly, who are you doing this for? An inspired way to answer all these questions is to make a vision board. A visual reminder is an important factor in your success and can be used for mental re-motivation for those times when you need to remember why you are making sacrifices.
Be Prepared to Conquer De-Motivation: Lurking in our heads are thousands of troubled thoughts that deter us right off track. Some to note: “I was good all week so I deserve a break” or “I’m working hard with no results so I might as well stop now.” Be equipped with the positive attitude that tramples these contemplations before they start. A one-on-one chat with your mind that debates these de-motivators is completely acceptable…although the grocery store line may not be the place to have this conversation unless you don’t mind some weird looks.
A Little Bribe Never Hurt Anyone: If getting your head in the game requires more than seeing visions and practicing self-talk, reward yourself. Praise yourself for planning your meals ahead of time. Pat yourself on the back for saying no to the leftover thought that told you to call it quits. And put some money in the piggy bank towards that spa day for trying a new machine. Every little step you make matters. Keep your attitude perky with that carrot in front of your nose. Okay, maybe not a carrot, but something of significance to you to keep your healthy mojo flowing.
How have you used your mind to motivate your healthy actions?

Totally agree! My #1 reason is ALSO about finding your motivation – once the WHY is in place the HOW comes so much more naturally…
