The holiday season is here and it’s that time again when everything seems to get hectic. Between shopping and planning, there seems to be little time for relaxation. If your can identify and your sleep schedule is taking the back-burner to all you have to get done, it is likely that your skin could use a pick-me-up.
Skin, especially the pads under your eyes, can look dreary and drained from a lack of sleep. Instead of spending money on makeup, let’s see if nature can help to banish the bags. Some researchers believe that figs can be just the thing to help revitalize the skin under the eyes.
Dark circles under the eyes are likely to due to a lack of sleep; therefore, the best remedy to cure them for good is to get more rest. Unfortunately for most of us, between working and preparing for the holidays, getting more sleep isn’t always an option. Also, many of us experience dark bags due to genetics and, no matter how much sleep we get, they never seem to go away. Some researchers believe that, no matter where your bags stem from, applying fresh fig under the eyes can help to alleviate the dark circles. According to health and wellness website, Live Strong, dark circles are likely to form under our eyes when we are feeling exhausted because “when you’re tired, skin can get dull and dehydrated causing hollow areas below your eyes and allowing dark blood vessels and tissue beneath your skin to show through, according to the New York Times.” In addition to getting enough sleep, it is important to drink plenty of water each day. A lack of water can contribute to feelings of fatigue and dull, worn-out-looking skin which can make bags appear worse.
Whether you add figs into your diet or use the fruit as part of a face mask, figs have numerous health benefits that make them a must have for this holiday season. A health and wellness website, Health Beckon, explains that this super fruit is packed with “vitamin A, C and E […and can…] help in rendering a rejuvenated and refreshed skin.” Whether applied to skin or mixed into your favorite meals, figs may be able to limit the tired-baggy appearance your eyes may have adapted. Health Beckon states that “the high water content in fig helps to flush out the toxins and waste from the body, preventing pimples and acne […and…] Application of fig pulp on the face helps to transport nutrients into the dermal layers of the skin, replenishing it from within.”
Since dehydration is a major reason our eyes may have bags under them, figs are an excellent fruit to help restore liquids into the body and limit the bags.
Verdict: Fact. Figs can help to ease dark circles that appear under the eyes. Especially popular during the holiday season, it is the perfect time to pick up figs at the local grocery store. Health Beckon suggests to make a face mask of “fig paste and yogurt. Apply it on the face and massage your skin with it for a few minutes. Wash it off after 15 minutes with lukewarm water,” to help rejuvenate your skin. It is also suggested by a health website for people with disabilities, Disabled World, to simply “cut fresh figs in half and place them under the eyes. Keep them there for 15 to 30 minutes [then] rinse with warm water.” This holiday season, pick up some extra figs, and give your skin a special treat.
