The New Fitness Craze You Should Try For A Confidence Boost

Recently, The Wall Street Journal reported on Amy Cueva’s – founder of Mad*Pow – obsession with belly dancing. After having three children, the woman in her 30s admitted to not ever feeling like she could get back in shape, especially while having back pain due to a herniated disk. That all changed when one of her clients suggested going to a belly dancing class back in 2004. While she was intimidated at first, her obsession with it only grew.

Who could say no to those incredible costumes? Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it makes for a great core workout. Widdling your waist has never been so fun.

That being said, belly dancing is not only a great option for those looking to get back (or stay) in their skinny jeans, but it also can help you boost your confidence.

In Vancouver, Washington, local belly dancing instructor Niira Daniella is hosting lessons for students with developmental disabilities. Of course, a few movements are modified in the choreography, but the essence of the dance form is visible throughout. She states on the practice:

” These girls can get up there and move their bodies and be confident – have some ownership of their bodies and be beautiful on stage.”

In yet another little outpost – but this time in Nebraska – Kerin Burnstock , the 9 Muses belly dancing studio co-founder, has created an escape for women in the area. Echoing what Cueva and Daniella state, Burnstock explains how upon entering your first class, you might be slightly intimidated or self-conscious, but that all fades away as everyone begins performing together.

Burnstock also experienced skeletal trauma after being in a car accident and was looking for a way to stay active, but not injure herself any further. She stumbled upon belly dancing and was able to rehabilitate herself. It’s truly an inspiring story. Ultimately, she opened the studio with 4 of her friends and it’s been an empowering project to say the least.

Who knew that such an age-old dance could be much such a reimergence in the fitness world? While many consider it provocative, we like to emphasize its empowering qualities for women everywhere. Hey, men can try it, too!
