Are you ready for a fiesta? Cinco de Mayo, or May 5th, is coming up and before you indulge in high-calorie snacks, dips and of course, margaritas, were here to tell you that you can have the healthiest Mexican celebration ever. Mexican cuisine actually started with rather healthy and simple ingredients. Think about it! Avocados, beans, corn, chicken, tomatoes, limes, and cilantro are in basically every dish yet we do love to add the cheeses, creamy sauces and corn tortillas. That all may sound delicious but your waistline may suffer the consequences. If you’re watching what you eat, which we should all be doing on this day anyways, the food options may be a little too tempting but have no fear. Here are our favorite healthy Cinco de Mayo recipes so you can grab your sombrero and fiesta all day, without the extra guilt!

Going out to eat? We know it’s much easier to eat and drink healthy when you’re making it yourself at home but there are healthy options at Mexican restaurants also! Here are some tips:
- Stick to things like chicken fajitas and taco salads (low carb)
- Share plates with someone if necessary (cut down on portion size and calories)
- Don’t be afraid to ask what’s in the restaurant’s sour mix (and ask for it skinny!)
- Avoid sour cream and too much cheese on your dishes
- Choosing between salsa and guac? Go salsa, too much avocado can be an overload of fat and calories, tomatoes are packed with vitamin C and antioxidants
