Workout Wear: A Light on Lorna Jane

Lorna Jane Workout Wear Review 1

One of the hottest imports in the activewear world is Australian brand Lorna Jane—a stylish line with a few brick-and-mortar stores mostly in California. The company sent me a few of its pieces to review and the results were pleasantly surprising. First of all, the little details that go into this line sent me over the moon. Each piece is decked out with a tiny, red plastic heart (think stick-on earrings from elementary school, but this is way cuter) and the phrase “made with love” printed on each tag. It’s always nice to know these little reminders are there when you’re wearing the clothing; it’s like a secret that’s between you and the garment. Overall, I found this to be a flattering and stylish line with just a few downsides.

1. Pammy Bra in Black

I had my doubts about this bra. The skinny straps made me skeptical about its ability to truly support, but this turned out to be my favorite item in this collection. This bra will change your life. It not only helps hold up your chest’s best friends, but also gives them a lift that would make any push-up bra jealous. Plus, the straps are cute too and can be worn under a variety of tanks. This bra is flattering enough to wear on its own, and it’s not the kind of piece you’d be ashamed to be seen wearing—I’m thinking of you, used-to-be-white-but-now-I’m-gray jogging bra. Now, I wouldn’t wear this during any kind of prolonged high-impact exercise as there was just a bit of bounce, but it worked fine for a step class I took.

2. Gemma Run Tank in Blue

The blue color in this tank made me swoon. It’s such a bright, robin’s egg blue that will remind you of springtime. The tank comes with a reflective Lorna Jane logo running horizontally up the back that makes it ideal for nighttime runs and walks. I found it to be both flattering and slimming—a tough feat for a non-fitted top. Plus, I enjoyed the racerback style that allowed for plenty of movement. But while I loved the idea of the drawstring hemline, I found that the tank wouldn’t always stay put even when I tightened it. After I hand-washed it, it looked like I tried to make blue Kool Aid in my sink so much of the dye had bled out. But despite this, it still remained that same vibrant color. Overall, this tank looks ultra-flattering and would be ideal for a variety of workouts.

3. Madi Excel Run Tank in Black

The Madi Excel Run Tank has these triangular-shaped straps that I had my doubts about, but yet again, I was surprised. It proved to be ultra-flattering and slimming. It also would layer well with almost any cute sports bra, and I could see it working for a variety of workouts. The T-shaped back is very cute and made it that much easier to move in. The only thing I didn’t like about this tank is that it didn’t breathe very well. I found myself getting really heated during aerobic exercise.

4. Magnitude 7/8 Tight in Black

I fell head over heels when I first saw these tights. The black and pink color combo is one of my favorites, and I loved the pink mesh diagonal stripes on the thighs. However, I must say that I became a little less thrilled with these after a few wears. These capris simply did not breathe well. I didn’t mind this during this chilly spring, but I know that I’d be burning up in these during a super-sweaty workout. I always felt really warm wearing these, even after a basic dog walk. But with that being said, they were also very flattering with the added compression making my legs look thinner. I’d suggest wearing these during less intense classes or low-impact workouts.

Bottom line: Lorna Jane probably does make the best tank tops around. If you prefer your tanks sans bra, consider trying these on. The leggings are another story. The pair I reviewed didn’t perform as well as I hoped, but it did look great. I’ve read that others dislike how the brand tends to plaster its name over all its pieces, but with clothing this stylish, you’ll want everyone to know just what you’re wearing.
