Supplements Vs. Whole Foods: What’s the Difference?

 

It always seems like the great debate. Should we go for supplements or should we go for whole foods? We personally always think it is best to opt for whole, all-natural, and primarily organic produce. This ensures that the body is properly satisfied and is essentially taking energy from tier 1 resources. That being said, we can always use a little help.

This infographic by the folks over at Evoke.ie perfectly outlines the difference between a supplement and whole foods – not only in their physical difference but also their advantages, disadvantages, and side-by-side comparisons. Did you know that in order to get the same amount of Vitamin C that is naturally found in oranges, you would need to consume about 12 oranges?

The key is in trying to consume as many fresh, whole foods as possible with varying numbers of beneficial and necessary nutrients. However, if you find that your body is lacking nutrients in specific areas than you might want to consciously supplement your diet. For example, if you are vegan and are not getting sufficient levels of B12, you could take caplets every morning. Another route you can go in, though, could of course be taking the food route. Did you know that nutritional yeast ( AKA “nooch”) is a great and delicious way to add this vitamin in your diet? Of course, there is always a solution to a supplement, but if you are not a fan of the food or need an easier way to ensure your body is properly fueled, supplements and vitamins are always a good way to go, too.

  1. I take a basic multi, and calcium, but other than that I eat a TON of fresh fruits and veggies so I assume that probably covers my bases.
