Super Bowl Sunday Fitness Plan

Super Bowl Sunday Fitness Plan

That time of the year has come again where TV commercials cost millions of dollars, the local grocery store is out of tortilla chips, and you are running out of time to decide which team to cheer on in the big game. Whether you are clueless about football or a big fan, we all know one thing: The guys on the field are the epitome of fit.

Looking to get something out of this year’s Super Bowl season besides a fresh helping of guacamole? Check out some of these 5 exercises inspired by the big game.

1. Squat Thrusts

This move is great for strength training and cardio, and has gained popularity from football training routines. Do as many in a row as you can quickly, and you will be sure to feel the burn.

Start by standing up straight. Next, drop your body down into a squat position and quickly throw your feet back until behind you until you are in a plank position. Do a push-up, and then jump your feet up to meet your hands. Now, jump up vertically into the air pushing through your legs. And repeat.

2. Tire Runs

This stereotypical as seen in football movies exercise is great to work on your speed, agility, and leg strength.

Lay down tires (or any place marker) in a zigzag pattern. Begin at one end, and sprint through the obstacles, making sure to step a foot in each of the tires in the line. Try to run with high knees to get more of a work out, and to not trip on the obstacles. You can do this move sans tires by hopping from foot to foot during the commercial breaks.

3. Superman

This exercise stretches and strengthens your back and core muscles. It also has a great name: nothing not to love.

Lie on your stomach, flat on the floor with arms stretched out in front of you.  On an exhale, raise your arms and legs off the floor and hold the position. Release back down to the floor after a few seconds and repeat.

4. Box Jumps

This plyometric exercise increases your speed and power. Plyometric exercises are based on using your muscles to exert as much force as possible in one move.

Stand in front of a box, or other sturdy surface, that is roughly two or three feet high.  Bend your knees and jump onto the box. Next, stand up straight and jump back down to the floor. Does this move 10 or 20 times, or until you need to stop. No box? Use a stair.

5. Impromptu Touchdown Dance Party

This is by far the most respected exercise inspired by the Super Bowl. We may be overestimating a bit, but this is a good way to get up off the couch for a bit and get your body moving!

Each time your team of choice scores a touchdown, jump up off the couch to show off your best dance moves. These can range from the sprinkler, the running man, and for those overachievers out there: the worm.
