Dinner and a Movie: Novels to Movies

It seems to be that all of our favorite books are being transformed into movies lately. The most recent best-seller gone movies are The Giver and Gone Girl. You more than likely read The Giver in school or just as a quick read when it was first published as a popular novel, but now it is on the big screen, and you are probably flocking to see it.

Although everyone has opinions on transforming a novel into a film, some think Hollywood has a way of making great novels become mediocre movies, while others love watching a book come to life. We have to admit that there are some fantastic film versions of our favorite books. This week’s dinner and a movie is for some wonderful books that were made into equally brilliant movies. We will try to steer clear of the series (looking at you Harry Potter and The Hunger Games) movies, and stick to those singular stories that we love to read and/or watch over and over again. Get cozy and join us for dinner and a movie!

How could we not love The Help? Every character in this movie, even the evil ones, some how makes it impossible not to be captivated by this story. Emma Stone’s performance as a female author in the 60’s is almost as impeccable as Viola Davis’ portrayal of a southern maid during the Civil Right’s movement. A book like this had to be brought to life on the silver screen. While watching The Help, attempt making these delicious crab cakes as marathon appetizers.

The Devil Wears Prada may be one of the most difficult movies to watch without feeling the intense urge need to stick up for Anne Hathaway’s character. Meryl Streep might just play her most wretched character of all time in this movie, but it is hard to deny her perfection in the role. The Devil Wears Prada is a good time to eat a salad, considering it is all about the woes of the fashion industry. Try this chopped Thai salad to accompany the movie.

After you have finished eating a light meal, finish off our dinner and a movie marathon with some fried dough. Can you think of what novel turned movie could be paired with fried dough? Water for Elephants. This novel took the world by storm when it first came out, and then had its second coming when it was turned into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon, Rob Pattinson, and Christoph Waltz. This love story is just as good in words as it is played by characters, so if you haven’t seen it, make sure you make it a dinner and a movie priority!

  1. Heh, at the moment none are coming to mind, unfortunately. I love movies and I love to read but once I’ve read something I have my vision and the movie rarely lines up with that…
