Another exotic fruit to add to your wish list: Granadilla.
Commonly known as the sweet granadilla, the sugar fruit is in the passiflora family—the flowering vine that provides us with passion fruit. Native to South America, the granadilla is similar to the better known passion fruit however their exterior is very different. The granadilla is the same size and shape as a plum but has a strong orange skin. Inside the fruit contains a transparent, jelly-like pulp (unlike the orange pulp in the purple passion fruit variety) with edible black seeds. It has the sweet and sour flavor that you may be used to from eating a passion fruit. If anything, the aroma of passion fruit shines through.
The distinct fruit is also a good source of healthy minerals like iron, magnesium and phosphorus. You can also expect to reap the benefits of high amounts of vitamin A, C and K. Plus, granadilla is a good source of calcium and fiber. Enough reasons for us to hop onto the exotic train.
Since the granadilla is so wonderful on its own it is commonly consumed straight out of its shell. However, its wonderful and refreshing flavors are a wonderful addition to jellies, frostings and more. Here are a few granadilla recipes we have our eyes on:
- Your #1 Greek yogurt topping will become this granadilla curd. We swear.
- Granadilla smoothie in the morning, in the afternoon, post-workout…whenever it is, we want it.
- Who can say no to a frozen granadilla lolly? The granadilla sorbet is just like that.
- Frost your loaf cake with this easy granadilla yogurt loaf.
- Imagine you on a patio with this fresh tuna carpaccio, avocado and granadilla salad. Heavenly.
- And, of course, you can always drink it with this granadilla mojito.
Have you ever tried granadilla? What is your favorite exotic fruit?
