Dinner & a Movie: Past Best Picture Winners + Winning Recipes

The Oscars are right around the corner which means movie season is in full swing! The only thing we love more than watching the Oscar nominees and winners on Oscar night is watching the movies they starred in to get them there. In the past there have been some incredible movies that won Best Picture. While the list is long (86 years and counting), We chose three of our personal favorites to get you all ready for Oscar night. For this dinner and a movie, we are going to take it back a few years, and reminisce with some of the best films of all time and some recipes to add to them.

The ultimate classic: Gone With the Wind is one of the most romantic movies of all time. Scarlet O’Hara has lead the way for sassy female characters since 1939 when the movie was released and subsequently won Best Picture. The film may be long, but that’s the way they do it in the south. Good things take time. For Gone With the Wind, enjoy some southern cooking with pulled pork BBQ. It may not be the healthiest, but it will be delicious and all we can say to that is, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

The Sound of Music + Triple Berry Strudel (via Barbara Bakes)

The hills are alive with the sound of strudel. For this occasion we have to change the words to the age old song. If you haven’t seen The Sound of Music (and no, the Carrie Underwood version does not count), then you probably didn’t have much of a childhood. Julie Andrews pretty much set the standard for what it means to be a great “caretaker” in this 1965 winner for Best PictureEven if you hate the idea of a singing nanny, the picturesque views of Salzburg, Austria are worth sitting down for three hours to watch. No better way to pretend you are in Salzburg than curling up with some triple berry strudel.

Million Dollar Baby + Mini Smoked Salmon Frittatas (via Health)

We are sensing a theme that many of these Best Pictures include strong female leads. In 2004, Hilary Swank plays a tough woman learning how to be a boxer under the coaching of Clint Eastwood. The dynamic duo made one of the most honest and breathtaking (literally at moments) films that year. We imagine that Hilary had to have a protein packed breakfast to gain all that muscle, so we are providing all of you with at least one healthy recipe for this week’s dinner and a movie. Mini smoked salmon frittatas are a delectable breakfast, but we are sure they would do just as well as a dinner!
