Bytes for Breakfast: Black Burger Buns + Black Rice Porridge

Green eggs and ham seems more normal than the latest trend of colored hamburger buns.

Burger King Japan just released their Premium Kuro Burger which fittingly translates to “Black Burger.” The black-colored bun is not just food coloring. The burger dough is colored with bamboo charcoal and the black ketchup gets its hue courtesy of squid ink.

I’m all for new food and have had plenty of my own Willy Wonka foodie experiences, but a black bun just reminds me of burnt toast. The Kuro isn’t the only burger suiting up in black. McDonald’s recently released their white and black-bun burgers and a Belgian fast food chain called Quick has a black bun burger as an ode to Star Wars which they aptly named the Dark Vador.

Needless to say I am scratching my head at the strangeness of the darkly colored buns. I hope this isn’t something that plans to make its debut in the U.S. anytime soon.
