The age-old tradition of boiling up bones to drink is making a serious come back. The trendy elixir has gone from our own grandmothers’ kitchens to Kobe Bryant. Why? It is said that bone broth contains the minerals magnesium and iron, nutrient dense proteins, collagen and calcium. This “super food” has been linked to bone health, reduced cellulite, increased immunity, digestive health, and reduction of joint pain. Are we saying to down a glass of bone broth everyday? No….well, maybe! At least it’s something to think about adding to your daily or weekly regimen.
This paleo diet staple food has been seen in Gwyneth Paltrow’s cook books, slurped down by Jessica Biel and Matthew McConaughey as well as the whole Los Angeles Lakers team. There’s even one restaurant in New York that has opened up a takeout broth window, Brodo, where people can order a broth just like they would a coffee! Chicken, beef, or pork bone broth at your convenience.
But what about the scientific facts? YahooNews explains, “Despite the fact that some health practitioners and health enthusiasts claim that they have seen favorable results through their experience in taking bone broth, there are still no clinical or strong scientific evidence that bone broth can actually help cure some illnesses.”
So what do you think? Fad or here to stay?
If anything, a cup of warm nutritious broth might be just what you need on a snowy January afternoon like today! Keep in mind if you want to get all health benefits, it’s important to use clean, healthy, meat. Unhealthy animals bones won’t provide you with as many nutrients.
Brodo’s own Chef Marco Canora shares how easy bone broth is to make:
- Take whatever bones you want (chicken, beef, pork).
- In a pot, cover with 3-4 inches of water.
- Boil for 5-7 hours.
- Add in flavors of your choice: carrots, celery, onion, salt, pepper, parsley, etc.
- Boil for another hour or so.
- Separate broth from contents and enjoy!
