Bytes for Breakfast: 50 Cent Fights Hunger + Silver Dollar Pancakes

The music mogul and entrepreneur 50 Cent (aka Curtis James Jackson) sat down with HuffPost Live yesterday to talk about his Street King energy drink initiative. The project teams up with the UN World Food Program in an effort to feed a billion children in Africa by providing a meal to a hungry child for every drink purchased.

Although the effort seems genuine, I can’t help but pick apart the capital-based charity model that the Fitty crew put together. Even 50 Cent said that he started the Street King brand to avoid “digging into his own pocket” and we have to know that he is making a profit off his energy drink even with the food that is being sent to the hungry children. Also, he seems to be confusing African hunger with American poverty throughout the clip. This is a classic situation of plastering a famous face on a bottle with “good intentions” and the product flies off the shelf—even if the business is a bit of a sideways.

Obviously any efforts to feed hungry children are beneficial. There is a major food crisis plaguing the region that 50 is concentrating on and helping any starving people by providing them a meal through SK makes a difference—one dime at a time. Millions have already been provided food and Fitty wants to get that to a billion.
