Gym Memberships are not One Size Fits All

Often we sign up for a gym membership without considering any personal preferences that may hinder or help your fitness regimen. Choosing the right gym is about more than just a nearby location or big chain name and may include some shopping around.

Go over this gym checklist before signing on for a long-term commitment.

[toggle title=”Your Fitness Personality”]Really consider your goals and your commitment level before joining a gym. Being in the right work out environment will help encourage you and your fitness goals. Do you want to train for a marathon? Are you looking to tone up? Knowing the type of activities you will be doing is key to finding a location that offers all of the amenities you will need to achieve or maintain your goals.[/toggle]

[toggle title=”Take a Tour”]Check out the gym before signing on the dotted line. Pay attention to how you are treated by the gym team, if the gym is overcrowded during the hours you would be working out, the equipment condition, locker room cleanliness and what amenities come with a gym membership beyond the basics like saunas, showers, pools, basketball courts and so on. It is okay to take a tour and leave to give yourself time to decide.[/toggle]

[toggle title=”Equipment Check”]Are you a cardio junkie? Are you looking for weight equipment only? Your gym needs may differ if you want head to toe equipment. Community recreation centers are often a low cost alternative if you don’t need all the bells and whistles. Determine if the quality and quantity of the equipment is up to your standards.[/toggle]

[toggle title=”Classes and Training Opportunities”]Make sure the class schedule offers the group classes you are interested in attending and that they fit your schedule, find out if there are additional costs involved in class attendance and if drop-ins are available. If you are interested in personal training, find out details on costs, trainer education level and availability.[/toggle]

[toggle title=”Cost, Fees and Membership Terms”]Ultimately, your wallet needs to know what you are getting into. Know what the exact membership costs are and be sure there are no hidden fees or terms. Is your rate fixed? Is there a cost for cancelling your membership? Always ask about additional perks for signing up such as a free personal training session, buddy passes, waiving initiation fees, using other gyms within the same network or even requesting to get your first month free.[/toggle]

Have you joined a gym and realized it is a bad fit? What is most important to you in a gym membership?
