Happy Chocolate Milkshake Day! 10 Awesome Recipes

Vanilla, strawberry, or chocolate? Oh wait! This week, you have no choice because it is National Chocolate Milkshake Day on Thursday! Milkshakes are a classic dessert that are popular even now, well over a hundred years after their birth. The concept of the milkshake as a treat has been around since the late 1800’s, however at the time of its discovery, it was an alcoholic beverage. The most common recipe called for a shot of whiskey, ice cream, and malted milk, while other holiday recipes called for eggnog additions. (Note to self: try that recipe one weekend.)

Anyway, it wasn’t until 1922 when a Walgreens employee in Chicago officially founded the milkshake at the fountain shop. It is believed that the first milkshake was concocted by adding two scoops of vanilla ice cream to malted milk. For our celebratory purposes today though, we will say that chocolate ice cream was also a main factor in the creation of milkshakes. What some people do not realize though, is that making milkshakes is not as simple as throwing chocolate ice cream into a blender. In fact, many ice cream parlors used syrups or chocolate ice cream mixed with another rich ice cream to achieve maximum flavor and consistency.

We are lucky that milkshakes are still a popular dessert. Diners, ice cream shops, and specialty shops are still making the drink, and in some cases even reinventing it to taste even more incredible. We’ve compiled 10 recipes to add a little something extra to your homemade chocolate milkshake!

  1. The Bailey’s shake sounds wickedly good. I made a “chocolate cheesecake” shake once that blended a bit of cream cheese into it. It was pretty durned tasty.
