“I am much more than a number on a scale.”
These are powerful words that many people in the world have uttered. Earlier this week, news anchor Jennifer Livingston from Wisconsin’s WKBT News 8 This Morning, responded on air about an email she received from a viewer that attacked her size and weight. It is so outrageous that it is best to share the letter verbatim:
Subject Line: Community Responsibility
It’s unusual that I see your morning show, but I did so for a very short time today. I was surprised indeed to witness that your physical condition hasn’t improved for many years. Surely you don’t consider yourself a suitable example for this community’s young people, girls in particular. Obesity is one of the worst choices a person can make and one of the most dangerous habits to maintain. I leave you this note hoping that you’ll reconsider your responsibility as a local public personality to present and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Reading these words makes me say ugh…a thousand times. This is a classic example of what I would call concern trolling—an intention that seems genuine but in reality is purposefully critical. This email is cloaked in concern for her health, but really it is a bully hiding behind the screen.
Luckily, Livingston handled herself with poise and publicly commented on the email and how letters commenting on the size, weight, gender or appearance of someone in the public eye is uncalled for. I am a believer that health is not a one-size-fits-all topic and fully appreciate Livingston acknowledging this on camera…that is her “community responsibility.”

It is National Bullying Prevention Month, so I know I shouldn’t intimidate or harass you into anything. But, maybe you won’t need any convincing when you feast your eyes on this Fruit Omelet from Colourful Palate. Charissa describes it as decadent. We oblige. A little something sweet is needed for standing up to what you believe in!

How do you feel about Livingston’s on-air response? What do you think of this sweet omelet?
