Mindful Monday: 4 Ways to Cope with a Lousy Day

It’s Monday and although the first day of the week provides a fresh start, having a lousy day is often linked with the Monday blues. We all know what it feels like to lose control of our days whether it is because of a string of unexpected events or to-dos that take longer than anticipated. A bad day can put a muddy filter in front of our eyes for the rest of the day causing you to be stressed, unhappy and feeling mentally doomed.

Here are some strategies to cope when you are struck with a lousy day that don’t involve retail therapy, eating out of an ice cream cartoon or crying your eyes out:

1. Remind yourself that what you are feeling is TEMPORARY.

There is no reason to get wrapped up in thoughts of the world ending because of a bad period in your life. Repeat to yourself that soon this day will be history and your lousy day will only be a memory.

2. Check your calendar for something to look forward to.

Even if a fun event is a week or a month away, reminding yourself that there are good times in your future will help you refocus and recharge. If you don’t have a fun event upcoming, add one! Pedicures with a friend, a dinner date with the husband or a planned weekend getaway will give you something to look forward to.

3. Make a list of 5 things you are grateful for.

When things get really stressful writing down some positive notes helps diminish the tension and give you some happy perspective. Plus, it is important to have a happy list for you to turn to all the time!

4. Take a 5-minute break.

Have an emergency hangout with yourself. Nothing gets you out of a negative rut like a breather outside or an SOS phone call with a friend. The distraction will help get you back on track and ready to take on the rest of the day…healthfully!

Your MINDFUL task for the week: Come up with an alternative way to beat a bad mood. Having a handful of ideas to get you away from a lousy mood will greatly benefit you moving forward!

I might have a bad day every so often but even on my worst days I am still happy! I always thinking about the positives in my life and remind myself that things could always be worse – and that someone in the world most likely has it worse than I do. It’s sad to think about that, but at the same time, it rids me of my foul mood and I am once again happy, despite whatever is going on!

I tell myself I have control. I live in the moment and enjoy something out side of myself. Take a long, deep breather and realize everything is good. besides, you can either let it fuel you, or destroy you. Its your day.
