According to a new German study, overweight children have less sensitive taste buds than kids that fall in the normal weight range. Their ability to distinguish all five tastes of bitter, sweet, salty, sour and savory are dulled and may cause their desensitized taste buds may drive children to overeat on a regular basis.

Even a picky eater can train their taste buds to eat healthier. Here are some tips to help adapt your taste buds away from the high-fat foods and into a healthier path:

  • Take small bites. You don’t have to commit to eating all of something that doesn’t appeal to you, but at least give it a shot.
  • Pair something you like with something new. This will challenge you to venture outside of your comfort zone and still stay on the safe side.
  • Figure out your food phobias. Is there something about the texture or the smell of a food that turns you off? Break down what the issues are so that you can learn how to overcome them.
