Bytes for Breakfast: Facebook Equals Higher Stress + Eggnog Bake

Hooked on Facebook? The addiction could be increasing your anxiety.

According to a new study by the University of Edinburgh Business School in Scotland, the more types of friends you have on the virtual book the more stressed you may be. The research shows that Facebook is no longer about communicating with your closest friends, but about managing a wider range of demographics from bosses to parents who are now able to watch your every move. In fact, more than half of employers have chosen not to hire a potential candidate because of their Facebook page.

Ben Marder, a marketing fellow at the University of Edinburgh and author of the report said, “Facebook used to be like a great party for all your friends where you can dance, drink and flirt. But now with your Mum, Dad and boss there the party becomes an anxious event full of potential social landmines.”

Many Facebook users may feel anxious about the being on Facebook because it is intrinsically a self-centered structure causing you to share mini bits of news about yourself. Those with the most contacts tend to be the most invested because they feel more pressure to produce something for their audience.

It may be time to reconsider your time spent on Facebook if it is adding additional stress to your life. Watch this video from  to hear more about the study:
