9 Skinny Sips for your New Year’s Celebration

A night out with the girls can turn into a liquid calorie disaster if you aren’t careful. The wrong fancy-schmancy cocktail choice can quadruple your calorie intake with a few quick slurps. You may have a safety drink like vodka soda to turn to, but those can quickly become boring and your New Year’s Eve should not be dull in any way!

If you are looking to thwart the ultimate Doomsday threat (extra pounds from throwing back a few too many) without being a total snore use this handy guide of the slimmest drinks to sip on when you are out and about with your 2013 glasses on.

Here are 9 cocktails that will ensure you are (slightly) sloshed in the healthiest way possible:

1. Tom Collins

Before sugar-laden drinks were all the rage, gin and sparkling lemonade was a beverage of choice. A Tom Collins is gin, lemon and seltzer water so the only calories you are consuming are coming from the alcohol itself.

2. Old-Fashioned

Don’t act like you don’t want to be Donald Draper for a night. The classic bourbon drink isn’t bothered with lots of high calorie ingredients so you can rest assured that your drink of choice is less than 200-calores.

3. Cosmopolitan

The pretty pink martini is made from vodka, lime juice and just a splash of cranberry juice landing the Carrie favorite at less than 150 calories. Be sure to request club soda instead of liquor depending on how the bartender makes the drink.

4. Gimlet

The basic recipe is gin mixed with lightly sweetened lime juice (although you can choose vodka or tequila) and the simple choice is perfect for saving calories.

5. Wine Spritzers

The perfect refreshing break from the dance floor is a wine spritzer. Order a white wine and a soda water and mix! Add a lemon or a lime to add some zing. A 5-ounce glass is about 100 calories and adds some much needed hydration to your night out.

6. Light White Russian

Need a pick-me-up? Ask your bartender if they have skim milk (and even better if they have coffee instead of Kahlua) and you can be sipping a creamy concoction without the guilt.

7. Moscow Mule

Made up of vodka, diet ginger ale and lime, the simple drink will hit your happy spot and keep you below the 100 calorie mark.

                                                                                                              Image via

8. Bloody Mary

The Bloody Mary is normally a synonym for brunch, but it is the perfect drink for mornings when you are still partying at 2 a.m. The tomato-based drink is high in flavor and keeps you around the 100 calories per drink.

9. Take it on the Rocks

If you are a straightforward kind of drinker don’t go shot crazy. Order your alcohol of choice on the rocks and sip like the sophisticated New Year’s Eve-er that you are.

You know the drill: everything in moderation, drink water in between alcoholic beverages and steer clear of drinks that have the word sugar in the title. If you follow these rules you may start the year hangover free!

What is your drink of choice? Do you have a healthy alternative for it?

I tend to go for wine, just because I like it, and can sip it slowly. As for other drinks I’ve bee getting into drinks made with bitters recently. If I’m drinking hard alcohol I will not worry too much about calories because I can only handle a couple of those types of things without feeling trashed, and can’t go overboard. Having a low tolerance is probably one of the best slimming tips, haha.
