10 Breadless Sandwich Ideas

I’m kind of a sandwich fanatic.

On every corner of NYC there are bodegas that sell hoagies but there is one that my husband and I frequent that we have coined “The Deli Man.” Usually I peel off the top piece of bread so I don’t feel like I am eating a loaf for dinner, but even so, my bread consumption needs to take a back seat from time to time.

But, ditching the bread doesn’t mean you have to ditch the sandwich. Here are ten ways to celebrate your love for sandwiches without the bread. Click on the photo to be taken to the recipe!

1. Get Creative with Cucumber

Loving these bite size cucumber sandwiches because a) they are adorable and b) you can fill them with anything you want. I’m thinking hummus, tuna, turkey….

2.  Lettuce Wrap Please

If you have a Jimmy Johns in your neighborhood, I hope you are familiar with the un-wich. This brings lettuce wrapped sandwiches to a whole new level.

3. Make Room for the Mushroom

Inspired. Melty. Goodness. This clever sandwich idea will be a real crowd pleaser.

4. Wrap it with Nori

Even Chef Morimoto would eye up this beauty. Spread a bit of avocado to the nori as your “mayo” and get creative with the rest. Mmmm.

5. Eggplant Beyond the Parmesan

Using slices of eggplant as bread is genius. This is the perfect Meatless Monday meal.

6. Substitute Tofu

Good sandwich bread can make or break a sandwich, but this creative take is everything you crave a breadless sandwich to be.

7. Get Fruity

If my mom was serving this as my after school snack I would be RUNNING home from the bus.

8. Finger Licking Good

Meat Roll-Ups from Instructables

Why try to replace the bread when you can just make roll-ups that look this pretty? Finger sandwiches are easy to make and even better to eat.

9. Slice Some Tomatoes

My Forman is already warming up for this brilliant sandwich idea. The filling is an herbed cream cheese but anything between grilled tomatoes sounds like a winner.

10. Put it on a Salad

When all else fails, put those sandwich topping on a bed of lettuce. Same great flavors and extra greens!

A sandwich is still a sandwich even with its outer bready layers! Don’t forget to check out our last recipe round-up on summer’s favorite treat…Popsicles!

Those are some pretty good and delicious ideas!!! More nutrition included too 🙂 I like the looks of the sushi roll up, because it’s basically like the Korean KIMBAP but with different fillings! I should make those more often since I have the necessary ingredients~teehee

I LOVE these ideas. I’m currently in a cabbage boat/wrap mode, but some of these are giving me some great ideas. Never thought about using the mushrooms as “bread”. Great list. Thanks for sharing, definitely pinning and passing this list along, too.

A cabbage wrap is also a fabulous idea. Or you could do slices of the purple type if you cut it thick enough maybe. I hope you try some of these other ideas and THANKS for sharing!

Yum. I want to come over when you do it. I love to make deli sandwich salads with turkey meat and other sandwich toppings.

These are so fun! I definately want to try them out 🙂 although not gonna lie — i feel like the eggplant would be a pretty lousy “support” for keeping the ingredients inside! haha

With most of these you have to cut them a little thicker than you normally would to have the same sandwich support. Otherwise I am sure it would be a mess! Thanks for stopping by BSW Elisabeth!
