Tech Tuesday: Nexercise App

Actually doing it is one the hardest parts of exercising. After a long and tiring the day, the idea of making yourself more tired seems counter productive. But now there’s an app that gives you a monetary for of inspiration that will definitely get anyone of the couch. It’s called Nexercise. An app that is equal parts fitness app, game app, and coupon app. This has 1,064 five star ratings on iTunes and 2,354 five star ratings in the Google Play store. Unlike any other application Nexercise gives its users discounts they can use in real life just for working out.

The app is broken into 3 sections: track, earn, and connect. The “track” section monitors the user’s physical activity. There are different types of physical activity to select from, like running, aerobics, or even playing with pets. For every 15 minutes you work out you earn points. The earn section is where you can see how many points you earned and redeem prizes. Some of the prizes include discounts on workout equipment, discounts on healthy food, and gift cards. Amazon, Fandango, Barnes & Noble and jcpenney are some of the types of gift cards they offer. In the connect section you can compete or workout with friends to earn more points. This app is fully integrated with Facebook which makes connecting with friends easier. Built into this app is also a timer and music player.

What makes this app great is that it takes away the excuse that you don’t get anything from working out ( well besides the health benefits.) Most fitness apps start off with unrealistic goals for couch potatoes. Nexercise lets you go at your own pace starting with 15 minutes of any exercise you prefer. Since the app incorporates so many different types of workouts, you can do yoga, play with your kids, go dancing and earn points for all three. Now instead of having an aerobics app, a running app, and a yoga app you can just have one app that does the job of many.

One of the drawbacks of this app is that it won’t count your workout if its running in the background. Also some users have complained about a lag time in the app’s timer. If it’s important for you to track your speed, distance or calories burned this app can’t do any of those things. So if your fitness level is more advanced, you may need other apps to supplement this one.  Overall, this app is great way to motivate you to work out when your feeling lazy.

Pros

  • Includes different types of exercise
  • Can be used by all fitness levels
  • Makes it easy to compete/connect with friends
  • It’s free

Cons

  • The timer lags
  • Doesn’t work when app is in the background
  • Doesn’t track improvement

You can download Nexercise in the iTunes app store or in the Google Play store for Android.

    Nice Writeup. 🙂

    However:

    1) The app does track in the background. Some Android phones have an issue where if the screen is off and if we detect that on the server, we give full credit.

    2) You can track/log distance (then it calculates speed) for activities such as running, walking, etc. Distance is even summarized on Profile > Stats.

    3) You earn points for at least 2 minutes, you just don’t get medals until you hit 15 minutes, so we recommend at least 15 minutes for most activities.

Thanks again for the write-up. 🙂

    Hi Kimberly,

Thank you so much for your review. We truly appreciate all feedback and are happy that you think our app is a great motivational tool. That’s exactly why we made it! Two things I noticed in you review that slightly alarmed me, however, are that you were not able to get it to run it in the background and that you were not able to get it to track speed or distance. The app should do both of those for you. We’d be happy to help you solve any issues you are having so that you can get the full Nexercise experience. We take customer experience very seriously and if your experience has been degraded in any way, we want to correct it. Thank you so much for your time and please feel free to contact me directly via email.

    Best
