Can Mint Leaves Really Alleviate This Skin Symptom?

We all know that mint is a soothing spice. The relaxing aroma is often used in spas to create a tranquil experience for our sense of smell. After-dinner mints are passed out in many restaurants to cleanse our palates. But what about skin? Our skin is the victim of everyday abuse from pollution and sun damage yet we often ignore healing and restoring it. While exfoliation procedures are important in order to rid of dead skin cells, sometimes our face just needs to be soothed a little. Research states that mint leaves might be an alleviating way to give our skin a break from daily damages.

Surprisingly, many skin products that we already use might contain mint. According to informational website, How Stuff Works, the ingredient “menthe,” or mint, is found in many products that are proven to help with skin irritations. How Stuff Works states that mint’s reaction on skin is beneficial because it “act[s] as an anti-pruritic agent [which] means that its juice can soothe and calm skin that’s itchy or infected.” It makes sense in retrospect because since mint is associated with calming, why should it be any different when applied to skin? A health and wellness website, Live Strong, explains that, “According to a 2006 study by ‘Phytotherapy Research,’ peppermint helps bolster the immune system.” Often, what is going on inside our body is reflected on our skin, so it is important to maintain an overall good health if you want flawless skin. Live Strong further explains that “mint also contains the B vitamins riboflavin and folate, which may help brighten skin.” It seems incorporating mint into your skin care routine will be an added boost in keeping our skin as healthy as possible. When it comes to acne, How Stuff Works asserts that, “because mint contains vitamin A, it may strengthen skin tissue and help reduce oily skin.” Let’s find out how mint leaves should be applied to skin so we can reap the best results and abolish acne for good.

How Stuff Works proclaims that mint’s “high content of salicylic acid […] loosens up dead skin cells, allowing them to shed easier,” which allows pores to remain unclogged, therefore giving us smoother, radiant skin. While many facial products contain mint, going straight for the leaves themselves is likely to be the least expensive option. How Stuff Works suggests to “mix two tablespoons (15 milliliters) of mint with oatmeal and yogurt […] apply it to your face. After 10 minutes, rinse the mask off with warm water.” This mask will help alleviate any skin irritations as well as create a soothing affect that will help to lessen acne.

Verdict: Fact. Mint does help to lessen acne. No matter what your skin type is, there are many different face masks that may be valuable to your skin.  A natural remedy website, Natural-Home-Remedies-For-Life, gives a list of face masks that include mint and can be used on all different skin types. This spring, rejuvenate your skin with mint!
