Marilyn Monroe’s birthday is upon us (June 1st!) which puts the infamous bombshell back in the spotlight. Although you can probably argue that she has never really left. The style and fashion icon thought fitness was an important part of her beauty and health routine. We love that people cared about exercise many decades ago.
The natural brunette (yes, her hair was dyed blonde to be more appealing!) weighed 118 pounds, but was listed as a size 12 dress. And even though she had a body that many people strived to have, her eating habits were questionable. An article from when she was modeling in 1952 shared her food journal for a day. Celebrities in modern times would be asked the same thing in a magazine interview so our obsession with health has not changed as much as we think. Here is what her daily intake would look like:
Breakfast:
- 1 cup of warm milk
- 2 eggs
- 1 multivitamin
Lunch:
Dinner:
- Piece of steak, lamb or liver
- 4-5 raw carrots
Snack:
From skipping lunch to the lack of fresh produce, we can’t say that Marilyn’s eating habits were one to applaud. In fact, her calories seem so restricted and nutritionally unbalanced that we are surprised she had the energy to make it through a day.
But alas, we ogle her. Even now.

I have to say, I am absolutely ridiculous – so I am loving the second quote! 😉 As for her diet… There isn’t anything TOO TOO processed in there (minus the sundae), so her diet isn’t horrific.
