A recent study from Tel Aviv University’s Wolfson Medical Center has showed that obese adults who wanted to lose weight were able to do so indulging in their sweet tooth during breakfast with a high-protein, high carbohydrate “dessert” first thing in the morning. So, dessert for breakfast anyone?
A major part of any diet, whether you plan to lose weight or maintain your current weight is satisfaction. In the study, the group that was allowed to eat sweets lost more weight because the diet-related weight loss triggers like ditching sweets was removed from the equation. We all know the feeling of having one egg for breakfast and instantly feeling starving. The rest of the day you will most likely be thinking about when you can get your hands on something that satisfies your belly and your cravings which can cause overindulgence. By satisfying your sweet tooth first thing in the morning you can potentially save unwanted calories later in the day.
Another perk of eating sweets early on in the morning is you have the entire day to burn it off versus the nighttime dessert that sit in your stomach while you sleep. Of course, the classic breakfast should still be a part of your life as you don’t want to be eating cakes and cookies for breakfast every single morning, but healthy carbohydrates with a little sweetness can satisfy you longer.
Who said that dessert has to be at the end of the day anyway?
Instead of grabbing the nearest doughnut, here are some healthy breakfasts that can be transformed into a.m. desserts:
- Oatmeal with honey, cinnamon and a small handful of dark chocolate chips. Oatmeal is a great base for all sweet flavors. Try these un-boring oatmeal recipes.
- Make a breakfast cookie like the Fitnessista does. We love her inspired recipe to bring cookies to the breakfast table.
- Greek yogurt with berries—a classic choice with lots of sweet flavor options.
- Sprouted grain toast (absorbs more minerals than whole grain!) with almond butter and honey.
- Serve a snack-size candy with your eggs…this is a one-bite satisfier!
- Make a sweet breakfast omelet. Learn how to make one:
Ingredients:
- 2 whole eggs, beaten
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
Get Cooking:
- Beat vanilla with eggs until it is thick, set aside for 15 minutes
- Heat the coconut oil in the pan
- Add mixture to pan; cook as you would a regular omelet
- Wait until it is firm and all the liquid has cooked. Serve with honey, almonds, peanut butter and cinnamon anything you want!

I LOVE having something sweet for breakfast. I never would have thought to put vanilla extract in an omelet! Definitely have to try that.

the image at the beginning of this post had me totally intrigued. when i was little whenever we had leftover bday cake i’d get to eat it for bfast. such a treat!
thanks for the comments!!!!!!!!!!!! post any suggestions YOU have for dessert for breakfast!
I read this somewhere recently and tried it out a few mornings in a row — it actually works! Though I was travelling…. so I’ll have to try it at home and see if it keeps the sweet tooth at bay here too =) Love the idea of a vanilla-y breakfast!
Oh dear, I am afraid I am not a breakfast eater. I know, I know. I love breakfast foods but the idea of eating anything hot or sweet for breakfast makes me a bit ill. Hehe, i guess that would be a weightless tactic because feeling icky might keep me from feeling like eating pretty much anything the rest of the day. But if I had to stomach anything first thing it would maybe be fresh fruit. And I’ve been known to have a refreshing Popsicle in the summer.
Interesting thoughts! I’ll have to try that!
Very intriguing idea. But how does it fit with the total daily calorie model? Meaning, if you exceed your calorie count for a 24-hour period, you’ll gain weight, regardless of when, during the day you have those extra calories.
I need to go and read the original studies and find out!
For me, dessert for breakfast would be disastrous! I find sugar to be addictive and after I’ve had a bit, want more and more and more! I’d be popping Kit Kats all through the morning if I had even one at breakfast time! LOL!
love this! my top “sweet-tooth” breakfast choices are steel cut oats with splenda brown sugar, raspberries, and coconut shavings or steel cut oats with turkey bacon and a tsp of maple syrup.
I also whipped up a batch of Blueberry Pecan Protein muffins that fit exactly what this article is talking abt, so feel free to check them out on my site 🙂
thanks for sharing!
Thanks Christine! I love muffins so those sound fabulous. Thanks for reading…and for eating dessert in the morning!
[…] PURE VANILLA EXTRACT – It’s more expensive, but don’t ever settle for anything less than 100% real vanilla extract (you really don’t want to know what they use in the fake stuff). It has no sugar (if it’s pure) and only 12 calories per teaspoon, so it’s a really great way to enhance the flavor of a sweet dish. Try it in your omelet with some coconut oil for a deliciously sweet breakfast. […]
