With The Hunger Games: Catching Fire coming out in theaters November 22, 2013, we here at Bite Size Wellness thought it’d be a great opportunity to present some savory recipes, inspired directly by the trilogy. If you’ve read the book series already, you’d know that the second movie will pick up right after where the first one left off, with Katniss and Peeta returning home after their victory, apprehensive of the consequences of embarrassing the Capitol. Rebellion, unrequited love, and a new twist in the annual hunger games will keep viewers on the edge of their seats for this one. Inspired by the hardy cuisine of District 12 and the fancy overindulgence of the Capitol, here are 5 awesome recipes from Fictional Food, inspired by the books/movies!
In the first book, Prim leaves this cute little snack for Katniss to eat on reaping day (when the draw for the District champion occurs). The first book narrates, “On the table, under a wooden bowl to protect it from hungry rats and cats alike, sits a perfect little goat cheese wrapped in basil leaves.” You can make this tasty snack yourself using basil leaves or grape leaves if those are easier to find (they are both tasty).
With a press of the button, Cinna conjures a ready-made lunch: “Chicken and chunks of oranges cooked in a creamy sauce laid on a bed of pearly white grain, tiny green peas and onions, rolls shaped like flowers, and for dessert, a pudding the color of honey”. Ingredients for this luscious meal include chicken breasts, flour, butter, orange juice concentrate, milk, heavy cream, an orange, salt, and pepper. Check out the easy-to-follow recipe.
Peeta tells Katniss in the first book about the goat cheese and apple tarts he makes at his family’s bakery. He reveals however that they mostly eat whatever grows stale at the bakery, being too poor to go for anything good enough to sell. Well he can eat the stale ones, but you can certainly try them nice and fresh. Greasy Sae experimented with the recipe many times until she came up with the perfect formula.
This District 12 recipe (who am I kidding. It’s made in the Capitol of course), is devoured by Katniss during her Victory Tour. “I could just eat this all night!” she exclaims in the book. Well so can we. I’m currently fighting the temptation to lick the screen (but not really succeeding).
This breathtaking stew was Katniss’s favorite thing about the Capitol. “What’s impressed you the most since you arrived here?” I rack my brain for something that made me happy here. Be honest, I think. Be honest. “The lamb stew,” I get out. Caesar laughs, and vaguely I realize some of the audience has joined in”. Prepare this bad boy today.
Will you be going to see Catching Fire?

I have actually never seen the first Hunger Games, so I think I need to see that one before seeing the second!
I haven’t gotten into that series-but I could easily get into that pumpkin brew!
I CANNOT WAIT for Catching Fire! I read all three books straight through on vacation last year and I am obsessed.
Not so obsessed as to create my own recipes from the book, haha, but obsessed none the less 🙂
