The Center for Food Safety launched a mobile application that will help shoppers to quickly and easily identify foods made with ingredients from genetically modified organisms. The free app, “The Center for Food Safety’s True Food Shoppers Guide” is available through mobile devices through iTunes and Andriod.
In today’s society, there are thousands of products on supermarket shelves that are made with ingredients from genetically modified crops. However, these GM foods are not labeled in the U.S, despite warnings from doctors and scientists that these foods may not be safe either in your diet or the environment. With the lack of mandatory labeling, it’s extremely difficult to determine which products are made with GM ingredients and which are not. The new application is deigned to give health and safety conscious consumers who wish to avoid these ingredients the tools they need to make informed purchasing decisions.
The True Food Shoppers Guide also equips consumers with valuable information regarding common GM ingredients, brands to look for, as well as to look out for. The application includes a “Four Simple Tips” section, and offers easy ways to avoid GM ingredients as they shop to feed themselves and their families.
In addition to a list of brands that produce foods with no GM content, the application also offers contact information for companies that do use GM ingredients. I find this particularly interesting as this feature enables consumers to personally voice their opposition to the use of GM foods directly to the parties that should be held responsible. As a result, the app serves not only as a shopping guide and teaching tool, but one that can be used for widespread advocacy and activism as well. This is a really great way for an average person to get involved in fighting for something that they feel should be changed. It gives people an opportunity to use their voice.

Pros:
- Allows you to be an activist,
- Informs you on what foods you should and shouldn’t be eating,
- The “Four Simple Tips” section.
Cons
- Could be viewed as “pushy” to constantly voice your opinion on GM foods,
- A bit overwhelming to use when trying to food shop simultaneously.
How do you feel about GMO’s?
