When I’m not working, I’m life guarding… which is also working. Anyway, life guarding (and being a field hockey goalie in 92 degree weather) has given me some serious insight on how to beat the heat during the summer. Follow these five easy steps to stay hydrated, avoid sun burn, and prevent serious problems like heat stroke and sun poisoning.
1. WATER. LOTS OF IT.

I drink water like a fish. Nothing will ever re-hydrate you faster without any side effects like water will. Really try to avoid sugary drinks like soda and sweetened tea because the salt and sugar will actually dehydrate you faster. Water is healthy, and now fashionable thanks to start-ups like Wat-aah! and Blk as well as reusable bottles (just make sure they’re BPA free!). To mix up your water, try adding fresh slices of cucumbers, lemon, lime or oranges to give it a healthy and flavorful twist!
2. Target Hot Spots With Cold Compresses

This is usually a last minute resort, and can really help if you have a fever as well. The fastest way to cool yourself down is to apply ice cold compresses (towels, ice packs, etc) to your main arteries and other areas. The most effective places are your wrists, your neck, your ankles (dipping your feet in the bath is more practical here) and your forehead.
3. Wear a Hat!

Hats are really great inventions and can actually help you stay cool by covering the top of your head and face. Wide brimmed hats are fashionable for the beach and can prevent your scalp and face from getting too much sun!
4. Raise Your Arms & Put Your Hands on Your Head

Tried and true, this is a sure-fire way to help you cool down and fast, especially after a work out. Not only is this a great after run stretch, it helps your breathe easier by releasing pressure on your diaphragm and slows your heart rate in turn.
5. Chew (or Suck) on Ice Cubes

To many of you, chewing ice cubes may sound like nails on a chalk board, but it provides an awesome and immediate relief on a hot day. Plus, it’s hydrating! If you want, you can think ahead of time and flavor the water your freeze (just avoid sugary additives) or freeze fruit smoothies to make it a delicious treat!

I run cold water over my wrists. Someone told me that cools you down quickly because the veins are close to the surface…it seems to work!
