Who knew that there was a day in the year that honors women around the world? There are no specific womanly qualifications, like being a mother, to be honored on this day. The only requirement is that you must be a lady. Saturday, March 8, 2014 is International Women’s Day and we think that is the perfect excuse to watch some movies packed with female power. Women are defined in so many ways these days, but – speaking as a woman – it is better off to recognize women as multi-dimensional creatures who deserve the utmost respect for what we accomplish everyday. So many movies come to mind when thinking of examples of female power, but we have picked out three in particular for this week’s “Dinner and a Movie”. Enjoy some inspiring female stories while trying out some delectable recipes all in honor of International Women’s Day! (P.S. don’t forget to hug/thank the inspirational women you know in your life this Saturday!
The Hunger Games + Roasted Pheasant (via Food Network)

We know what you are thinking based on this recipe, but be open-minded about this one. If Katniss Everdeen doesn’t scream girl power, than we don’t know who does. Volunteering herself for certain death so that her sister can live, keeping her allies in the arena safe, defying the Capitol: Katniss breaks down every gender stereotype there is in The Hunger Games. Unfortunately, since she lives in a post-revolutionary world, and her district isn’t the most pleasant, the food choices here were limited. We chose a recipe for pheasant because we thought that would be more appropriate than the rabbits Katniss provides her family with in the movie. Be as adventurous as Katniss and attempt to make a pheasant for this week’s dinner and a movie. In some places, it is a specialty!

Now here is a recipe we are sure you can all get behind: ‘Falling In Love’ Chocolate Mousse Pie. This recipe is actually inspired by the film, Waitress, which we highly suggest watching. Jenna is stuck in a miserable marriage and a miserable job, but she finds joy somewhere in the world: making pies. Life suddenly throws her a few curve balls and she has to decide how important putting her happiness first really is. This is an inspirational story disguised by wise-cracking waitresses who teach us a lesson worth knowing. Enjoy some chocolate mousse pie while laughing (and crying) during this romantic comedy.
A League of Their Own + Chili Dogs (via Food Network)

To whoever said there is no room in sports for women: we would love for you to see A League of Their Own. It may not be the “uplifting single mother” story, but it is a “females can do whatever they set their mind to (and they can do it in a skirt)” story. This movie has been an encouraging one for women and girls who defy stereotypes for over two decades now. A film about women playing baseball in the first ever female professional league only calls for this: chili dogs. There is nothing like a frank at a ball game, so stuff your face with this chili dog recipe while enjoying A League of Their Own!
Happy International Women’s Day!
