The Biggest Loser Episode 8: Team Building and Morale Crushing

Biggest Loser Season 14 Episode 8 Recap

This episode is all about teamwork and trust. We learned…not much of anything, except:

  • You have to learn to work together towards a common goal, even if you absolutely cannot stand the other person;
  • Six chicken nuggets equal 18 grams of fat; and
  • A large buttered popcorn is over 1,000 calories.

Immunity is the name of the game as the contestants learn that they have a chance to win immunity for everyone. If they lose a total of 70 lbs, everyone is safe. Otherwise, whichever one falls below the red line is out. And the first challenge gives the contestants a chance to lower that number. Or, rather, the kids give the contestants a chance to lower that number. In walk Sunny, Lindsay and Bingo for the first time in forever. The results of their brain and brawn test will determine how much of a weight advantage the group gets going into the weigh-in. Five questions, five exercises and a pound off for each question and exercise they get right.

The kids get 4 out of 5 of the nutrition questions wrong (they chose spaghetti with meat sauce and garlic bread as having more carbs than a bean burrito with chips and salsa because they didn’t factor in the beans—beans have carbs, kids!). Next up is exercise and the kids earn a perfect score. So between the quiz and the exercise, they took 9 lbs off of the contestants’ weight loss goal.

At the gym, Gina snaps, Gina leaves, Gina comes back, and Gina Gina Gina. Always the Gina show at The Biggest Loser Ranch. Jillian zeros in on Alex. If Jillian tells her to run for five minutes, she stops after one. Then the trainers are snipping at each other because even though the contestants are losing weight, they still can’t run for more than a minute at a time. Jillian thinks Bob and Dolvett are being too soft on the contestants. Her muscles bulge, Hulk smash! and Jillian forces the boys to admit that she is right and they are wrong.

Challenge time! There are ten six-foot-tall sand hills on the beach, and each has either a red or a green arrow buried inside. The arrows point to the next sand hill. The finish line is waaaaay far away on a pier, and the contestants must reach the finish in 30 minutes. If they work together and achieve that goal they get a collective 10 lb advantage.

Running in the sand is hard, and digging in the sand is even worse. Rather than overexert herself, Gina hangs back and lets everyone else do the work. On the run to the finish line, Gina falls down. Joe picks her up and shoves her lazy butt up a dune and the group crosses the finish line with only 5 seconds to spare.

The last chance workout is all about working together, trust and commitment. It involves a super high climb up a pole and across a tight rope. The goal is to teach the contestants to work with people and function in their presence even if they don’t trust them because their success is intertwined.

The contestants and trainers are a little nervous about the weigh-in because 51 lbs is a big number to hit and a lot of people were off their game this week. So how’d they do?

  • Danni lost 7 lbs and is finally in the 100s (which the show annoyingly keeps calling “wonderland”)
  • Joe only lost 6 lbs
  • Jackson only lost 5 lbs
  • Alex loses 3 little lbs
  • Jeff lost 4 lbs
  • Gina lost a measly 4 lbs
  • Francelina brings up the rear with a 2 lb weight loss

Wow. Not good, except for Danni who continues to dominate the competition. So that means Francelina falls below the red line and she’s headed home. Jackson’s crying, Alex is crying, Gina’s crying (for a totally different reason), and it will clearly be a loss to the entire group.

Next week, the contestants face their fears and Sunny has a heart-to-heart with her mother.
