Is Exercise The Key To A Sounder Sleep?

exercise benefits for snoring

We all snore once in a while, but for those of us who share a room with someone who snores every night, we know how old being kept awake can get. If you or someone you share a room with snores every night, the good news is there are many ways to help prevent snoring. The bad news is that many of the products that can be bought in stores may not work. While searching for anti-snoring products may seem discouraging, research suggests that one healthy remedy may do the trick. As many experts say, the first way to help a snoring problem is to figure out where the issue lies. If it is due to excess weight, especially around the throat area, then some researchers suggest exercising might be all it takes to stop snoring once and for all.

According to a mental health and well-being website, Help Guide, “Snoring happens when you can’t move air freely through your nose and throat during sleep. This makes the surrounding tissues vibrate, which produces the familiar snoring sound.” Having a cold or drinking too much alcohol are two reasons that can cause occasional snoring; however, snoring can also happen once in a while if we are overly tired or in a really deep sleep. For people who are more likely to snore most nights than not, Help Guide explains that “people who snore often have too much throat and nasal tissue or “floppy” tissue that is more prone to vibrate.” If you carry excess weight around your throat, then toning up the area can lead to less snoring. However, we all know that spot reduction is a myth, so exercising the entire body regularly to reduce overall body fat is key.

The Ravent, a website that is dedicated to help stop snoring, explains that “moderate exercise a few times a week is beneficial for a multitude of reasons, including its ability to help you stop snoring naturally.” Starting an exercise routine will not only help the quality of sleep, but it will also help us lose any excess weight that may be causing the snoring. Health Guide states that “exercising your arms, legs, and abs […] leads to toning the muscles in your throat, which in turn can lead to less snoring.” Performing exercises that will keep your entire body in shape will help lessen excess snoring at night. Start incorporating weight and cardio exercises into your routine to help keep snoring at a minimum.

Verdict: Truth. Regular exercise can help to stop snoring every night. For additional throat exercises, Health Guide suggests to “repeat each vowel (a-e-i-o-u) out loud for three minutes a few times a day. Place the tip of your tongue behind your top front teeth. Slide your tongue backwards for three minutes a day. Close your mouth and purse your lips. Hold for 30 seconds.” All of those exercises can help to alleviate snoring by toning the muscles in your throat. Speak with your doctor to find out if exercising is your answer to help stop snoring. Even if exercising isn’t the answer to stop your snoring once and for all, incorporating daily exercise into your routine can’t hurt!
